A website maintenance plan is a monthly retainer covering updates, backups, security monitoring and a small allowance of changes, and the honest range is wide because the plans differ enormously in how much of each you actually get.
The confusing part when you are comparing them is that every provider lists roughly the same bullet points, and several of those bullet points describe things your hosting already does. Paying twice for automated backups is common and nobody mentions it.

What a real plan actually covers
Stripped to substance, the deliverables fall into five areas.
- Updates applied and verified. Core, theme and plugin updates, on a schedule, with someone checking the site still works afterwards. The verification is the work; the clicking is not.
- Backups tested by restore. Automated backups off the server, and periodic proof that a restore succeeds. An untested backup is a hypothesis.
- Security monitoring and cleanup. Malware scanning, vulnerability alerts, and a commitment to clean the site if it is compromised. That last commitment is the expensive part and the reason the plans cost what they do.
- Uptime monitoring with a response. Anyone can buy a monitor. What you are paying for is a human who reacts when it fires.
- A change allowance. A number of hours or requests for text edits, image swaps and small fixes.
Notice how much of that is a person rather than a tool. Every tool in the list is available cheaply or free; the plan is buying the attention and the accountability, and any plan priced as though it were only tools is selling you tools.
What your hosting probably already does
Before you pay for a line item, check whether it is already included, because several usually are on any reasonable managed host.
- Automated backups. Most managed hosting takes daily backups with a retention window and one-click restore. Confirm the retention period and whether restores are self-service.
- TLS certificates. Provisioned and renewed automatically on any modern platform. Paying a maintenance plan for certificate management in 2026 is paying for a solved problem.
- Server-level security. Firewalling, denial-of-service absorption and network isolation belong to the host. A maintenance plan cannot provide these and should not charge for them.
- Uptime monitoring. Frequently included in the hosting dashboard, and free monitors are widely available. The value in a plan is the response, not the check.
- Staging environments. Increasingly standard on managed WordPress hosting, and the right place to test updates before they reach production.
The overlap is the single most useful thing to audit before signing. Read your hosting plan first, then read the maintenance proposal, and ask directly about anything appearing in both.
The questions that separate a real plan from a padded one
Every proposal looks similar until you ask about process. These five answers are where the difference shows up.
- Do you test updates on staging first, or apply them directly to production? Direct-to-production is faster and cheaper for the provider and means your site is the test environment.
- When an update breaks the site, what happens? You want a stated rollback procedure and a response time, not reassurance that it rarely happens.
- Are backups stored away from the hosting account? A backup inside the account you are protecting is not a backup against account compromise or provider failure.
- What is the actual response time, and is it during business hours only? A four-hour response on a Friday evening means Monday morning.
- What is included in the change allowance, and does unused time carry over? Providers differ enormously here and it is where the value of a mid-tier plan is decided.
One more that is worth asking bluntly: what happens if the site is hacked? A plan that includes cleanup is materially different from one that offers it at an hourly rate during an emergency, and the difference does not always appear on the comparison table.
Whether you need a plan at all
Three situations, with different answers.
A brochure site on managed hosting, no plugins beyond a contact form. You probably do not need a plan. Automatic updates plus your host’s backups plus a free uptime monitor covers it, and the residual risk is genuinely small.
An ecommerce site, or one running plugins that touch payments or customer data. A plan is reasonable. Updates carry real risk, downtime has a measurable cost per hour, and you want someone whose job it is to respond.
A site your business depends on, with custom development. What you want is a development relationship rather than a maintenance plan, because the work is not routine and the retainer model fits it badly.
The honest test: write down what would actually happen if the site went down on a Saturday. If the answer is that you would notice on Monday and it would not matter much, you are buying insurance against a small loss. If the answer involves lost revenue per hour, buy the plan and check the response time.
Reducing what needs maintaining
The cheapest maintenance is the work that does not exist, and most WordPress maintenance burden is self-inflicted through accumulated plugins.
Each plugin is an update to apply, a vulnerability surface, a compatibility risk and a performance cost. Sites with forty plugins need a maintenance plan because they have forty plugins. Auditing that list is often the single highest-value hour anyone spends on the site.
